The Proposal
The Miss America Organization has been around for over ninety years. The pageant began in 1921 when Atlantic City was looking to lure in more people beyond the summer season. After the first couple of years, the pageant began to roll. It became very popular very fast. Society seemed to really enjoy the pageant. There have been many years where the pageant created controversy. For example, this past year, Miss Kansas had a tattoo of the “Serenity Prayer” down her side that she decided to not cover up during the bathing suit portion of the competition when it is known that all tattoos should be covered during the whole competition. Other previous controversies include marriage, divorce, pregnancy and race. In the 1930s, the pageant was taken over by a new manager who made the “rules” much more acceptable, which many are still followed to this day.
For my Youtube Mashup, I want to see how the pageant has changed throughout its time, especially with the feminism movement (if that even effected it at all). I personally think that many people always have a strong view on pageants. Either they enjoy them, or they bash them. I want to research why this is. I am thinking it is because these people are not fully educated on pageants and only go with the media on thinking that a pageant is just to show off beauty. I hope to maybe change this perspective with by fully explaining what the Miss America Organization does with research backing it up.
I am semi hesitant to explore this topic, only because I am pro pageants. The people who are not, love to voice their opinion, which makes me slightly upset and frustrated. I know I will be facing many feminist cons, and I am prepared for that, but I still know deep down I will be getting frustrated with it. I am trying extra hard to go into this assignment with as much as an open mind as I can. I am afraid that my points will be too biased so I am really going to need to double check that.
I am expecting to find many images of the pageants and its contestants then and now. I know that in 1968, there was a feminist riot in Atlantic City all because of feminism. I want to really look into that and see how it has (or has not) changed the pageant. I also hope to find some sort of videos. A song I will be focusing on is There She Is, Miss America by Bert Parks. I want to analyze and research the song and see how Bert Parks came up with the lyrics.
For my video, I really hope to find some clips on the pageants in the 1920s, 1930s, or 1940s, even though it was first televised in 1954. The riot would be a very important aspect of my project, so I will search high and low to find it!
