Reflection
I could not be more happy with my decision to take Professions in Writing Arts. As an education major, everywhere I turn, I hear that it is nearly impossible to get a teaching job. This frightened me. Before enrolling in Professions in Writing Arts, I had no idea where my future would take me without getting hired to be an elementary school teacher. I know that I have a dual major, but had no idea what could be done with it. From being in this class, my mind is now (somewhat) at ease. I know what my options are with a Writing Arts degree. There are many opportunities for jobs in writing that I would have had no idea existed if I did not take Professions in Writing Arts.
Learning about jobs, graduate school, and internships in writing is the main focus of Profession in Writing Arts. I can confidently say that I know there are opportunities for me after I graduate with my Bachelor’s Degree. I have not yet made a decision, and want to see where my life takes me, but I know what there are options for me to choose from. There are many graduate schools that can further my degree in both writing and education. Some of these schools offer programs where you can work for the university and receive an education for free. This offer caught my eye because I don’t want another couple of years of loans added on to my existing ones.
Before I took Professions in Writing Arts, I was very close-minded on only going into the education field after I graduated from college. I did not even consider going into the writing field, mainly because I was dead set on being a teacher, as I have been for years now. This class not only opened my mind, but prepared me for other job opportunities as well. I have learned many important skills, like how to “beef up” your resume, or which websites are the best ones to look for jobs on. While many may think that the writing field is very specific, there are so many directions one could go in to get a job. Say someone is pursuing to be an author. Not only do that have to decide the genre, they have to decided the sub-genre as well as age group. The categories can get even more specific than this. Thanks to Professions in Writing Arts, I am conscious of the many fields writing can take me.
Being an education major, I started to take a lot of the information that we were learning about with a grain of salt. I didn’t want to hear that there was a chance I wouldn’t be able to be hired, unless I was willing to relocate. But as graduation approaches, and my fellow classmates are my competition, I started warming up to the fact that a writing job may be what has to happen for the time being. From this class, I have learned to not be as close minded, or there is a very slim chance I will have an income right out of college. I can’t limit myself to only being a teacher. I have put so much work int my Writing Arts degree that I don’t want to short myself. It would be a waste of my time and my money if that was the decision that I decided to make.
Overall, I am very thankful that I enrolled in Professions in Writing Arts. It has calmed me down and taught me that being a teacher is not my only option. I am more comfortable knowing that I am about to graduate with many options for employment. No matter the grade I receive in this course, the best thing I received from it was peace of mind.
